Here at Lisbeth Joe we are committed to creating a sustainable business – and in all the ways that one could interpret sustainable! One of the key interpretations we care about is our impact on the environment.
One of the first activities we undertook was to consider the impact of animal leather versus vegan leather. We ultimately made the hard decision to use animal leather and you can read more about how we came to this decision in our blog. We have now invested in changes to our packaging to minimize our environmental impact, and this was a really hard decision because it ultimately meant moving away from the brand and colors we love to share with you.
The first change we have made is to our boxes. We’ve moved away from boxes that contain a lot of dye and a glossy surface coating in favor of a Kraft box that is recyclable, reusable, compostable, and biodegradable. The old boxes were recyclable, however when we considered this carefully, we discovered the energy required to recycle these boxes and dispose of the dye was significantly more than a box that could be composted and biodegraded. Furthermore, the ones we have chosen have been made from 90% recycled materials.
The second change we have made is to the plastic mailers. We are moving away from our signature pink poly mailers (that we love) because they were made of plastic and are not recyclable. We have sourced new mailers that are made from 100% recycled materials and 50% post-consumer waste. These new mailer is also designed to be used twice and comes with a second sealing strip, so please be careful to use the perforated opening to preserve the mailer for another use. The other thing about these mailers is that the manufacturer is local to us, so we pick up new mailers as we are passing, meaning no need for shipping via trucks and distribution centers.
